The three zips are the same theme. A preset only decides the starting palette, heading font, a few settings, the words, the home page, the page templates, and the header and footer, and you can change all of them afterwards. Products, photos and demo text are not included: a fresh install shows your own products, and sections that need a product or an image show samples in the theme editor until you choose one.
Presets
| Preset | For | Palette | Fonts | Home page, in order |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Decant | Decant and sample sellers, and discovery-box brands | Flacon (pale glass page, petrol ink and buttons) | Halant headings, Schibsted Grotesk body | A Hero ("Find your scent, one sample at a time", with Build a discovery set and Take the scent finder), Discovery set ("Pick the scents, we fill the vials"), Fragrance finder ("Three questions, six scents worth trying"), Featured collection ("The scents people finish"), Collections grid as blotters ("Start with what you already like": Fresh, Floral, Woody, Amber, Gourmand), Icon row as steps ("From the full bottle to your vial"), Rich text as quotes ("From people who tried first") and Newsletter ("New scents, restocks and the odd free sample") |
| Parfumerie | A niche perfume house, full bottles and a story | Oud (brown page, cream ink, rose-gold buttons) | Baskervville headings, Schibsted Grotesk body | A Hero ("A house of slow perfume, made by hand", with Shop the perfumes and Read the house story), Image with text ("We make six perfumes and no more"), Featured collection ("The perfumes"), Featured product ("Smoked Iris, where it started"), Discovery set ("Live with them first"), Rich text as quotes ("From the perfumer's notebook"), As seen in, Blog posts ("Notes from the bench") and Newsletter ("Letters from the bench") |
| Attar | Oil perfumes and attars, roll-ons and samples | Amber (honey page, oxblood ink and buttons) | Ovo headings, Schibsted Grotesk body | A Hero ("Pure oils, aged in small batches", with Shop the attars and How to wear an oil), Collections grid as blotters ("Shop by oil": Rose, Sandalwood, Oud, Musk, Amber), Featured collection ("Most worn"), Discovery set ("Three oils to start"), Fragrance finder ("Find your oil"), Icon row as steps ("How to wear an oil"), Image with text ("From the copper still"), Rich text as quotes ("From people who wear it") and Newsletter ("New batches, as they're ready") |
The fourth palette, Neroli (white page, bitter-orange buttons with dark labels), has no preset of its own: choose it in Theme settings › Colors on any preset.
The presets also differ in these settings:
| Setting | Decant | Parfumerie | Attar |
|---|---|---|---|
| Color palette (Theme settings › Colors) | Flacon | Oud | Amber |
| Heading font (Theme settings › Typography) | Halant | Baskervville | Ovo |
| Heading size | 100% | 92% | 92% |
| Text logo size on phones (Theme settings › Brand) | 27px | 21px | 18px |
| Family names (Theme settings › Colors) | The standard list | The standard list | Its own list, with Rose, Sandalwood and Oud (chapter 2) |
| Sprays per ml (Theme settings › Size and concentration) | 15 | 15 | 0, because oils don't spray |
All three presets turn on Show quick add button and Show second image on hover (Theme settings › Product cards), which are off when a setting has never been saved, and put the back-to-top button on the right.
Each preset's header and footer carry its own sample words:
- The announcement bar reads "Try before the full bottle · Free samples with every order" (Decant), "Made in small lots in Daylesford · Sample any perfume for $9" (Parfumerie) or "Alcohol free · Blended and aged in small batches" (Attar). Those words are plain text. Rewrite them to match your shop.
- The menu promos sit under a top-level link called By family (Decant), Perfumes (Parfumerie) or Attars (Attar). If your menu has no link with that title, change the promo's Menu item (chapter 3).
- The footer has a brand column with a sample line, Shop and Help menu columns, and a Follow column with your social icons.
Every preset ships these templates. Each preset fills them with its own words:
| Template | Use it for | What's on it |
|---|---|---|
product | Your main scents | The full product page: size and concentration, trust rows, the Scent profile and accordions. In the Attar preset it's already set up for oils. |
product.oil | Oils and attars | The same page with roll-on bottles, no sprays, and oil wording |
product.discovery-set | The set product | The product page with a Discovery set section under it |
product.goods | Anything that isn't a scent: atomisers, compacts, sample trays, gift cards | A plain page with no Scent profile and no perfume claims |
page.contact | Your contact page | The contact form with an order number field and a "Before you write" text column |
page.compare | Side-by-side comparison (chapter 4) | The comparison table |
page.how-it-works | A page explaining how you work | Your page text, an Icon row as steps and an FAQ |
Chapter 6 explains how to choose between the four product templates. Assign a page template in admin under Online Store › Pages, in the page's Theme template field, and a product template in the product's Theme template field.
The presets' hero buttons point at all products and the menu promos at /collections/all until you choose your own links, so go through the home page and point each one at the right collection or product. The exception is Take the scent finder in the Decant preset, which jumps down to the Fragrance finder on the same page: keep it only while that section is on the home page.
A fresh install doesn't show these until you've set them up:
- The hero is text only until you pick an image. In the theme editor you see a sample still life in the strip window, but that sample is only for you. Shoppers get the eyebrow, the headline, the text and the buttons, with no window, until you choose an Image (chapter 4).
- Discovery set on the home page shows a sample in the theme editor and nothing to shoppers until you choose a Set product (chapter 9).
- Featured product in the Parfumerie preset shows shoppers only its eyebrow and heading until you choose a Product. In the theme editor you see the sample still life beside them.
- Blog posts in the Parfumerie preset shows nothing to shoppers until you choose a blog that has articles.
Fragrance finder and Discovery set both start on your all products collection, and that collection holds everything: atomisers, gift cards and the set itself. The finder ranks only products with a custom.family, and the rack leaves out sets and anything on product.goods, so neither offers those. Pointing each at a collection of scents is still tidier (chapters 9 and 11). Until a scent has a custom.family, shoppers don't see the finder at all (chapter 7).
Install
- In Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
- In the Draft themes section, click Import theme › Upload zip file, choose the zip of the preset you want and click Upload. Don't unzip it first.
- When the upload finishes, click Edit theme to open the theme editor and make it yours.
- When you're ready, click Publish next to the theme in Draft themes, or in the top bar of the theme editor. You can upload a second preset next to it to compare; only the published theme is live.
First steps
- Brand: Theme settings › Brand: your logo, or the shop name as a text logo in the heading font, and a favicon. A long shop name looks better with a smaller Text logo size on phones.
- Colours and fonts: Theme settings › Colors › Color palette, then Typography (chapter 2).
- Menus: in admin, Content › Menus: build the main menu and the footer menu (chapter 3). Rename or move the header's menu promos to one of your own top-level links.
- Options: name your product options Size and Concentration, or tell the theme what you call them in Theme settings › Size and concentration (chapter 8).
- Metafields: create Decant's metafield definitions and fill them in for your scents (chapter 7). The scent profile, the card notes and the finder all read them.
- Price per ml: set a unit price on each variant, or fill in
custom.volume_ml(chapter 8). - Templates: give each product the right template:
product,product.oil,product.discovery-setorproduct.goods(chapter 6). - Discovery set: create a set product with a Size option (Set of 3, Set of 5, Set of 8) and a collection of scents. Tag the product
discovery-set, assign it theproduct.discovery-settemplate, and choose your collection in that template's Discovery set section, which starts on all products (chapter 9). - Finder: choose a collection of scents, and match its Families to your
custom.familyvalues (chapter 11). - Hero: pick an image, or set the Layout to Text only if you want to stay without one (chapter 4).
- Filters: install Shopify's free Search & Discovery app and add your filters, including Family (chapter 13).
- Real promises: the presets ship with demo words, and many of them are claims about your products and your shop. They reach shoppers as soon as you publish, so rewrite or remove all of these until they only say what's true:
- The product page's Trust rows, accordions and the Hero's Foot facts: "Free samples with every order", "Drawn by hand", "Batch and fill date on every vial", "Ships by road", "Ships in 2 days", "30-day returns", "Alcohol free", "Aged in small batches" and the like. A trust row shows on every product that uses the template. The goods template names a town ("from Melbourne", "from Daylesford", "from Footscray"), so change that to your own. Check the shipping wording in particular: how perfume may be sent depends on your carrier and your country.
- Every quote in the Rich text sections and the As seen in logos. The quotes are invented, and so are the publication names in the Parfumerie preset, which show to shoppers as text even with no logo image. Replace them with real reviews and real press, or delete them. Publishing made-up reviews or press can break consumer law.
- Prices and sizes written into the text, which don't update on their own: "Sample any perfume for $9", "Every scent comes in 1, 5 and 10 ml", "1 ml in each vial" and "Priced per ml".
- The newsletter's offer ("the odd free sample", "Twice a month"). The theme doesn't send anything itself (chapter 4).
- The footer's About text, which names a sample town, and the Icon row's and hero's words.
- Other brands: don't name other perfume houses, and don't list "inspired by" or "dupe of" scents, anywhere in your shop. Decant has no field for it on purpose (chapter 7).
- Publish: when you've checked a product, a set, the bag and the home page on your phone.
