Fragrance finder
Chapter 11 of the Decant user guide.
The Fragrance finder section asks three questions and ranks your own scents as the shopper taps: which families they like, how loud (Soft, Balanced or Bold), and when they'll wear it (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter or Any). A line says "Smoked Vetiver leads at 92%", and the results reorder under it, each with a "92% match" tab. There's no account and no email, and nothing is stored or sent anywhere. It all happens in the page.
Set it up
- Choose your scents. Pick a collection in Scents to rank. The presets start on all products. Only products with a
custom.familyare ranked, so atomisers, gift cards and the set stay out, and "Ranked from 24 scents" counts only what was ranked. - Fill in
custom.family,custom.sillageandcustom.seasonson those scents.custom.familyis what puts a product in the finder.custom.accordshelps too (chapter 7). - Match the families. Each line in Families must equal a
custom.familyvalue, ignoring capitals. If your products say "Citrus" and the finder says "Fresh", they won't match.

How the ranking works
Each question has a weight: family 60, how loud 25, season 15. Only the questions a shopper has answered count, and the score is what the scent earned out of what was possible.
| Question | Full marks | Part marks | No marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family | custom.family is one the shopper chose | An accord named after a chosen family earns its percentage times 0.8, so Woody:80 earns 64% of the family marks | Neither |
| How loud | custom.sillage is close to the answer: Soft aims at 1.5, Balanced at 2.5, Bold at 3.5 | Marks fall away with distance. A scent with no sillage gets half marks. | A sillage far from the answer |
| Season | custom.seasons includes it | A scent with no seasons gets half marks | It has seasons, but not that one |
Any counts as not answered. The match is capped at 98%, because a perfume can't be a perfect match on three taps. Ties go to the scent that comes first in the collection, so the same answers always give the same order.
For example, a shopper picks Woody, Balanced and Autumn. A Woody scent with sillage 3 and seasons Autumn and Winter earns all 60 for family, 20 of 25 for how loud and all 15 for season: a 95% match. An Amber scent with Woody:60 and the same sillage and seasons earns about 29, 20 and 15: 64%.
What shoppers see
- Before they answer: your first scents in collection order, with no tabs, and "A good place to start."
- Nothing close: "Nothing close yet. Try another family, or see everything." with a link.
- At the limit: the other family chips stop responding, and a line says why: "Three is the most. Take one off to change."
- On a phone: the results line rides along at the bottom of the section while the questions are in view, with a link that jumps down to the results.
- Under the results: "Ranked from 24 scents in this shop." with your See all link.
If nothing in the collection has a custom.family yet, shoppers don't see the section, and the theme editor shows the sample and says why.
