Colors

Color palette sets the storefront's fourteen colors at once:

PalettePageSheetsBlotter bandAccent inkCover bandSticky noteFeels like
Paper (default)Natural paper #f4f1eaBright sheet #fffdf8Blue-grey #e5e8eeRoyal-blue ink #2c40a6Notebook blue-black #1b2049Marigold #f5cd5aPlanners and printables (the Inkwell preset)
InkInk navy #141c37#1a2341#222c4dMarigold #f2b33d#0c1229#f6d886Premium planner brands and ebook authors. A dark palette.
DarkroomDarkroom black #121011#1b1819#252122Safelight red-orange #ff5b37Safelight red-black #2c0d09Amber #ffc073Photo presets and LUTs (the Shutter preset). A dark palette.
PopWhite #ffffffWhite #ffffffWarm grey #f4f2edTangerine #e4570fIndigo #1f1c40Lemon #ffd84aTemplates and brand kits (the Studio preset)

All four meet WCAG AA contrast for text (4.5:1) and controls (3:1) on every background the theme uses, including the cover band. In Pop, text set in the accent color (links, the Instant download label) is mixed a little toward the ink, so the tangerine stays readable on white; buttons keep the pure tangerine.

Below the palette, each color can be set on its own. A color you set overrides the palette until you clear it (the field then reads "From palette"). The groups and what each color paints in Inkwell:

Note

Overriding a color can lower contrast. Check text on your new color with a contrast checker before you publish.

Most sections also have a Background setting: Page (the page color), Blotter (the blotter band, behind the FAQ and What's inside in the presets) or Cover (the deep band, with light text and light buttons). Everything inside a band, including buttons, fields and focus rings, switches with it.

Typography

SettingDefaultNotes
Heading fontLibre BaskervilleHeadings, product names, the text logo, and page numbers ("Page 18 of 120") and quotes in italic. The theme loads the face you pick and its italic.
Body fontProza LibreBody copy, navigation, buttons, prices, badges and labels. The theme loads regular, semibold and italic.
Base text size16px (14 to 18)Scales all text

The presets use Libre Baskerville (Inkwell), Manuale (Shutter) and Besley (Studio) for headings, all with Proza Libre. Any font in Shopify's font library works. Inkwell never fakes a bold or italic the font doesn't have, and all text is in sentence case: the theme never turns text into capitals. Italicize a word in a heading and it shows in the heading italic, in the same color.

Layout

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Page widthMediumNarrow, Medium or Wide
Page margin64px (20 to 80)Space at the left and right of the page on large screens (1200px and wider). Tablets use at most 40px and phones 20px.
  • Show back-to-top button (on): a button that appears after shoppers scroll down one screen. Position: Left (default) or Right; the Shutter preset uses Right. Pick the side opposite your chat button. It is mirrored for right-to-left languages.
  • Brand: Use a custom logo (off: the shop name shows as a text wordmark in the heading font), Logo, Logo width (180px, 80 to 320, with a custom logo) and Favicon (32 x 32px recommended).
  • Motion: Reveal sections on scroll (off): sections fade up once as they scroll into view. Cards lift, corners fold and drawers glide whatever this says. Every effect holds still for visitors who ask their device for reduced motion.

Commerce

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Free dispatch over0Only for stores that also ship physical items. Your real free-shipping threshold, in your store's currency. Above 0, the buy box of a product that ships adds "Free shipping over $50.", and a cart that holds something to ship shows "Add $12.00 more for free shipping." and then "Your order ships free." They only show to customers shopping in your store's currency, and never for downloads. Leave it at 0 if you sell only files.
Show currency codeOffPrints the currency code beside every price

Product cards

Every product card is a sheet: the photo inset on a bright card with a soft paper shadow and a small folded corner, up to two badges on the photo, then the product name in the heading font, a row of chips (Instant download and the page count, "120 pages"), the price and the rating stars. On devices with a mouse, hovering the card lifts the sheet and turns the corner a little further.

A card shows at most two badges on its photo, in this order: Save 20% (a compare-at price above the price), then one of Free (the product's price is 0), Bestseller (tagged bestseller) or New (tagged new, or newly published), then Sold out if there's room. The cards in the presets show the Instant download badge and the page count, which come from the Digital products settings below.

Digital products

The settings behind Inkwell's download features, each explained in its chapter.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Treat all products as digitalOffShows the Instant download badge and the delivery note on every product, whatever its shipping setting. Turn it on if you only sell downloads. With it off, a product counts as a download when none of its variants needs shipping (chapter 8).
Instant download on product cardsOnThe Instant download badge in the card's chip row, on downloads only
Page count on product cardsOnThe "120 pages" chip, from the custom.page_count metafield (chapter 7)
Hide quantity for digital productsOnHides the quantity selector in the buy box for downloads, and the stepper on a download's cart line while its quantity is 1. A file is bought once.
License option namesLicense, LicenceOptions with these names show as license cards instead of pills. Separate names with commas; capitals don't matter (chapter 10).
Delivery note in the cart"Your files arrive by email and on your order page right after checkout"A sticky note in the cart drawer and on the cart page when the cart holds a download. Leave it blank to hide it.
Folded corner on cardsOnThe folded top corner on cards, the gallery, license cards and the flip-through. Off gives every sheet four square corners.
Paper detailsOnWashi tape, sticky notes and pen notes in the hero and the freebie section. Off removes them all; the text you typed for them doesn't show.

Customer accounts and Social media

  • Customer account menu: links in the header's account panel. Leave it empty to use the menu Shopify creates for customer accounts.
  • Social media: Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, X, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Threads. Each link you add shows as an icon in the footer.
