The Product section's settings:

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Show breadcrumbsOnThe trail above the product
Enable image zoomOnAdds a zoom button to each image and opens images full screen

The gallery shows the active image on a large sheet with a folded corner and small paper thumbnails under it; on phones it is a swipeable carousel. It handles images, video, YouTube and Vimeo, and 3D models, with the product's badges on the first image. When a variant has its own image, choosing it brings that image first. Images whose alt text starts with #inside are preview pages: they stay out of the gallery, its thumbnails, zoom and the product card, and show in What's inside instead (chapter 9).

Under the gallery sit two blocks that every product page has, which you select in the editor's block list under the Product section:

  • What's inside: the preview pages, the full-screen flip-through and the What's included checklist (chapter 9).
  • Before and after: a slider for a product with before and after images (chapter 11).

Both show nothing on products without the data, so a product with no previews and no before and after images shows just its gallery. The section also has the pre-order settings below. Its buy box is built from blocks you can reorder, remove or add again.

Buy box blocks

The presets' order is Product metadata, Title, Price, Delivery note, Works with, Inventory, Variant picker, Buy buttons, Back-in-stock request, Spec table, four Collapsible rows (Description, How to download, License terms, Refunds on digital items), Pickup availability and Share.

BlockWhat it showsSettings
Product metadataThe line above the title: the product type, linked to its products, then the rating ("4.9 · 312 reviews")Show vendor in metadata (off) and Show SKU (off). The rating needs a reviews app that fills the product's reviews.rating and reviews.rating_count metafields, and hides when a product has none.
TitleThe product titleNone
Product vendorThe vendor, linked to its productsNone
PriceThe selected variant's price and compare-at price, with "Tax included" beside itShow tax note (on)
Delivery noteThe Instant download badge and "No physical item will be shipped", on downloads only (chapter 8)Note ("No physical item will be shipped")
Works with"Works with" and a row of chips with generic icons: Note-taking apps, Any PDF reader, Print at home (chapter 8)Heading ("Works with"), Chips to show (6, 1 to 10) and Fallback list
InventoryThe selected variant's stock ("Only 3 left", "In stock", "Pre-order" or "Sold out"). Counts show only for variants whose inventory Shopify tracks. Shows nothing for downloads: a file never runs low.Low stock threshold (10, 1 to 40)
Variant pickerOption pills, swatches, selects and license cards (below)The license cards' text (chapter 10)
DescriptionThe product descriptionNone. The presets show the description in a Collapsible row instead, with Show the product description on.
Buy buttonsThe add button with the price in it ("Add to cart · $18.00"), quantity, subscriptions, accelerated checkout, installments and the sticky barSee below
Back-in-stock requestUnder a sold-out variant: an email field and a Notify me buttonHeading ("Notify me when it's back") and Text ("Leave your email and we'll write to you when it's back in stock.")
Pickup availabilityWhether the variant can be picked up from your locations. Shows nothing for downloads.None
Spec tableThe details: a table of contents with dot leaders: Format, Pages, the variant options (Paper size: A4), File size and Delivery ("Instant download"), then optional SKU, type, vendor, weight and barcodeHeading ("The details"), Spec row position (Above or Below product details), Show format, Show page count, Show file size, Show delivery and Show variant options (all on), Show SKU, Show product type, Show vendor in spec table, Show weight and Show barcode (all off). Format, pages and file size come from the metafields in chapter 7; a row with no value is hidden. Each Spec row adds one of your own metafields: Label ("Software version"), Product metafield (namespace.key, such as custom.software_version), Value (used when the metafield is empty; a typed value shows on every product that uses the template) and Unit.
Share"Share" and the product's own web address as a link, for shoppers to copy or openNone
TagsThe product's tagsNone

The theme blocks from chapter 5 (such as the presets' Collapsible rows) and app blocks can go between them. Blocks with nothing to show for a product take no space: a product without reviews shows no stars, one without metafields shows no rows in The details.

Back-in-stock requests are sent to you, not to the shopper: each request reaches your store's sender address as a contact message naming the product and variant. Nothing is sent to the shopper automatically, and nothing subscribes them to marketing. Reply when the stock is back, or use a back-in-stock app instead. Downloads rarely sell out, so this mostly matters for printed goods.

The variant picker

Each option shows as the selector that suits it, with the option's name and the chosen value in its label ("Paper size: A4"):

  • License cards: an option named in Theme settings › Digital products › License option names (License or Licence by default) shows each value as a card with its summary, its price and what it allows (chapter 10).
  • Swatches: an option whose values carry Shopify swatches (a color or an image), as small round swatches.
  • A select menu: an option with more than eight values and no swatches.
  • Pills: every other option, as a row of small rectangles; the chosen one is filled.

Sold-out values stay selectable and are struck through, their text in the faint text color, so shoppers can still see the price; screen readers hear that the value is sold out. Choosing a value updates the price, stock, images, The details and buy buttons without a reload, and arrow keys move between pills, swatches and license cards. Combined listings (Shopify Plus) work too: a value that belongs to another product loads that product in place.

Buy buttons

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Show subscription optionsOnAppears when the product has subscription plans, such as a planner-pages-of-the-month club
Show quantity selectorOnA stepper beside the add button. Hidden for downloads while Theme settings › Digital products › Hide quantity for digital products is on (the default).
Show accelerated checkout buttonsOnShop Pay, Apple Pay and so on: customers see the payment methods available on their device
Show Shop Pay InstallmentsOnAppears when Shop Pay Installments is enabled on your store
Show sticky add-to-cart barOnProduct pages only: a bar with the photo, title, price and add button appears when the add button scrolls out of view
Returns noteEmptyA line under the add button, such as "Fixed or refunded if a file won't open"

The add button is a full-width primary button with the price in it, which follows the chosen license and options. Gift card products show recipient fields (name, email, message and send date), so a gift card can be sent to someone else; gift cards never count as downloads.

Pre-orders

For a planner that's still being finished, or a printed edition. Inkwell labels a variant as a pre-order only from real data, with two opt-ins on the Product section (both off by default; connect a true or false product metafield to either to choose per product):

  • Show oversold variants as pre-orders: for tracked variants that keep selling at zero stock (Continue selling when out of stock) with 0 or fewer in stock.
  • Show single-delivery purchase options as pre-orders: for products sold only through a pre-order app's purchase options (leave it off for try before you buy).

A pre-order variant shows "Pre-order" in the stock line and on its add button, and its cart line carries a "Pre-order" property. Pre-order note adds a line under the button, such as "Ships in March" (give a date or a range), and becomes the property's value; connect a product metafield to set it per product. The Featured product section has the same three settings.

B2B and wholesale

For customers buying for a company location (a school buying a class set of printables, a shop stocking printed planners), the buy box shows their catalog's quantity rules (minimum, multiples and maximum) and volume pricing (the price per unit at each quantity), and the quantity field follows the rules. Customers without B2B see none of it. Add the Quick order list section to the product template for a table of every variant with quantity fields.
