# Theme settings

Chapter 2 of the Inkwell user guide.

Open the theme editor and click the gear icon (**Theme settings**). The groups below appear in this order.

## Colors

**Color palette** sets the storefront's fourteen colors at once:

| Palette | Page | Sheets | Blotter band | Accent ink | Cover band | Sticky note | Feels like |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Paper** (default) | Natural paper `#f4f1ea` | Bright sheet `#fffdf8` | Blue-grey `#e5e8ee` | Royal-blue ink `#2c40a6` | Notebook blue-black `#1b2049` | Marigold `#f5cd5a` | Planners and printables (the Inkwell preset) |
| **Ink** | Ink navy `#141c37` | `#1a2341` | `#222c4d` | Marigold `#f2b33d` | `#0c1229` | `#f6d886` | Premium planner brands and ebook authors. A dark palette. |
| **Darkroom** | Darkroom black `#121011` | `#1b1819` | `#252122` | Safelight red-orange `#ff5b37` | Safelight red-black `#2c0d09` | Amber `#ffc073` | Photo presets and LUTs (the Shutter preset). A dark palette. |
| **Pop** | White `#ffffff` | White `#ffffff` | Warm grey `#f4f2ed` | Tangerine `#e4570f` | Indigo `#1f1c40` | Lemon `#ffd84a` | Templates and brand kits (the Studio preset) |

All four meet WCAG AA contrast for text (4.5:1) and controls (3:1) on every background the theme uses, including the cover band. In Pop, text set in the accent color (links, the Instant download label) is mixed a little toward the ink, so the tangerine stays readable on white; buttons keep the pure tangerine.

Below the palette, each color can be set on its own. A color you set overrides the palette until you clear it (the field then reads "From palette"). The groups and what each color paints in Inkwell:

| Group | Color | What it paints |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Page | **Page background** | The page and the header |
| Page | **Body text** | Body copy, option values and the values in The details |
| Sheets, blotter and headings | **Sheets and panels** | The sheets: product cards, the product gallery, license cards, preview pages, index cards, drawers, dialogs, the mega menu and fields |
| Sheets, blotter and headings | **Blotter band** | The pale band behind hero art, What's inside, the FAQ and any section set to **Blotter**, and disabled buttons |
| Sheets, blotter and headings | **Headings, names and prices** | Headings, product names, the wordmark, navigation and prices; also the border of secondary buttons and the fill of selected option pills |
| Secondary text | **Secondary text** | Introductions, helper text, labels in The details, license summaries, page-count chips, page numbers under previews and the Sold out badge |
| Secondary text | **Faint text** | Compare-at prices, placeholders, a license's "not allowed" lines, and sold-out option values and license cards |
| Controls and accent | **Control borders** | The borders of fields, selects, option pills, license cards, checkboxes and steppers. Keep it at 3:1 or more against the page, sheets and blotter. |
| Controls and accent | **Accent ink** | Primary buttons, text links, focus rings, the selected license card's ring, ticks in lists, rating stars and the cart count |
| Controls and accent | **Text on accent** | Labels on primary buttons and the cart count |
| Controls and accent | **Sale and errors** | Sale prices and the Save badge, and error messages |
| Cover band and sticky note | **Cover band** | The deep band of the announcement bar, the freebie section, the footer and any section set to **Cover** |
| Cover band and sticky note | **Text on the cover band** | Text and button fills on the cover band (its secondary text and borders are mixed from it) |
| Cover band and sticky note | **Sticky note** | The New, Free and Bestseller badges, the cart's delivery note, the "Most popular" tag on a license, and on the cover band its links, kickers and focus ring |

> **Note:** Overriding a color can lower contrast. Check text on your new color with a contrast checker before you publish.

Most sections also have a **Background** setting: **Page** (the page color), **Blotter** (the blotter band, behind the FAQ and What's inside in the presets) or **Cover** (the deep band, with light text and light buttons). Everything inside a band, including buttons, fields and focus rings, switches with it.

## Typography

| Setting | Default | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Heading font | Libre Baskerville | Headings, product names, the text logo, and page numbers ("Page 18 of 120") and quotes in italic. The theme loads the face you pick and its italic. |
| Body font | Proza Libre | Body copy, navigation, buttons, prices, badges and labels. The theme loads regular, semibold and italic. |
| Base text size | 16px (14 to 18) | Scales all text |

The presets use Libre Baskerville (Inkwell), Manuale (Shutter) and Besley (Studio) for headings, all with Proza Libre. Any font in Shopify's font library works. Inkwell never fakes a bold or italic the font doesn't have, and all text is in sentence case: the theme never turns text into capitals. Italicize a word in a heading and it shows in the heading italic, in the same color.

## Layout

| Setting | Default | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Page width | Medium | Narrow, Medium or Wide |
| Page margin | 64px (20 to 80) | Space at the left and right of the page on large screens (1200px and wider). Tablets use at most 40px and phones 20px. |

## Navigation, Brand and Motion

* **Show back-to-top button** (on): a button that appears after shoppers scroll down one screen. **Position**: Left (default) or Right; the Shutter preset uses Right. Pick the side opposite your chat button. It is mirrored for right-to-left languages.
* **Brand**: **Use a custom logo** (off: the shop name shows as a text wordmark in the heading font), **Logo**, **Logo width** (180px, 80 to 320, with a custom logo) and **Favicon** (32 x 32px recommended).
* **Motion**: **Reveal sections on scroll** (off): sections fade up once as they scroll into view. Cards lift, corners fold and drawers glide whatever this says. Every effect holds still for visitors who ask their device for reduced motion.

## Commerce

| Setting | Default | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Free dispatch over | 0 | Only for stores that also ship physical items. Your real free-shipping threshold, in your store's currency. Above 0, the buy box of a product that ships adds "Free shipping over $50.", and a cart that holds something to ship shows "Add $12.00 more for free shipping." and then "Your order ships free." They only show to customers shopping in your store's currency, and never for downloads. Leave it at 0 if you sell only files. |
| Show currency code | Off | Prints the currency code beside every price |

## Product cards

Every product card is a **sheet**: the photo inset on a bright card with a soft paper shadow and a small folded corner, up to two badges on the photo, then the product name in the heading font, a row of chips (**Instant download** and the page count, "120 pages"), the price and the rating stars. On devices with a mouse, hovering the card lifts the sheet and turns the corner a little further.

| Setting | Default | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Product image shape | Portrait 4:5 | Portrait 4:5, Square or Landscape 4:3 |
| Show quick view button | Off | Opens the product's media, options and buy buttons in a panel without leaving the page |
| Show quick add button | Off | Products without options go straight to the cart. Products with options (such as a License option), a required subscription plan or a gift card recipient open quick view. |
| Show swatches | Off | Shows the values of the first option that has Shopify swatches, such as Color. **Swatches before "+" count**: 5 (2 to 8). |
| Show second image on hover | Off | On devices with a mouse, shows the product's second image while the card is hovered or focused. Products with one image don't change. Preview pages tagged `#inside` are never used (chapter 9). |
| New badge for new products | 21d (0 to 90) | Days after a product is published that it shows the **New** badge. Products tagged `new` always show it; 0 uses the tag only. |
| Show compare checkbox | Off | Shoppers tick up to 3 products and see them side by side on the comparison page. Stays hidden until a page using the `page.compare` template is chosen as the **Comparison page** (chapter 4). |
| Comparison page | Empty | The page with the `page.compare` template |

A card shows at most two badges on its photo, in this order: **Save 20%** (a compare-at price above the price), then one of **Free** (the product's price is 0), **Bestseller** (tagged `bestseller`) or **New** (tagged `new`, or newly published), then **Sold out** if there's room. The cards in the presets show the **Instant download** badge and the page count, which come from the Digital products settings below.

## Digital products

The settings behind Inkwell's download features, each explained in its chapter.

| Setting | Default | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Treat all products as digital** | Off | Shows the Instant download badge and the delivery note on every product, whatever its shipping setting. Turn it on if you only sell downloads. With it off, a product counts as a download when none of its variants needs shipping (chapter 8). |
| **Instant download on product cards** | On | The **Instant download** badge in the card's chip row, on downloads only |
| **Page count on product cards** | On | The "120 pages" chip, from the `custom.page_count` metafield (chapter 7) |
| **Hide quantity for digital products** | On | Hides the quantity selector in the buy box for downloads, and the stepper on a download's cart line while its quantity is 1. A file is bought once. |
| **License option names** | License, Licence | Options with these names show as license cards instead of pills. Separate names with commas; capitals don't matter (chapter 10). |
| **Delivery note in the cart** | "Your files arrive by email and on your order page right after checkout" | A sticky note in the cart drawer and on the cart page when the cart holds a download. Leave it blank to hide it. |
| **Folded corner on cards** | On | The folded top corner on cards, the gallery, license cards and the flip-through. Off gives every sheet four square corners. |
| **Paper details** | On | Washi tape, sticky notes and pen notes in the hero and the freebie section. Off removes them all; the text you typed for them doesn't show. |

## Customer accounts and Social media

* **Customer account menu**: links in the header's account panel. Leave it empty to use the menu Shopify creates for customer accounts.
* **Social media**: Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, X, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Threads. Each link you add shows as an icon in the footer.
