Collector data
Chapter 7 of the Loot user guide.
Loot's collector features read product and variant metafields in the custom namespace, the one Shopify admin uses when you create a definition. You don't need an app or any metaobjects. You only need the metafields for the features you use: a figure shop can skip the game fields, a board game shop the grades. Every feature hides when its data is empty, so nothing breaks while you fill them in.
Step 1: create the product metafield definitions
In admin, go to Settings › Custom data › Products and click Add definition for each row you need. Type the Namespace and key exactly as shown (Shopify fills in custom. for you when you type the name, so check the key it suggests).
| Name (yours to choose) | Namespace and key | Type | Validation | Example | Used by |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rarity | custom.rarity | Single line text | Limit to preset choices: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, Chase | Legendary | Rarity badge, bubble tint, card ring, chase foil, rarity filter (chapter 8) |
| Series | custom.series | Single line text | Neon Ronin · Wave 3 | The series line on cards and the series chip on the product page | |
| Set | custom.set_collection | Collection reference | Neon Ronin wave 3 | The series chip's link, the set box, the "Complete the set" strip, the cart's set nudge, the "Got it" toggle (chapter 10) | |
| Edition size | custom.edition_size | Integer | Minimum 1 | 500 | "Limited to 500", and "No. 045 of 500" with a variant's edition number |
| Exclusive | custom.exclusive | Single line text | Con exclusive | The exclusive badge, in your words | |
| Grade | custom.grade | Single line text | 9.5 | The grade chip on cards and the graded slab label (chapter 8) | |
| Grade label | custom.grade_label | Single line text | Gem mint | The slab label | |
| Grader | custom.grader | Single line text | The grading company's name | The slab label | |
| Cert number | custom.cert_number | Single line text | 48210377 | The grade chip and the slab label | |
| Release date | custom.release_date | Date and time | 24 Oct 2026, 7:00 pm | Drop chips on cards, the product page countdown and drop lock, the drop calendar, the hero countdown (chapter 9) | |
| Ships from | custom.ships_from | Single line text | Ships from 14 Nov | The pre-order line on cards, the product page and cart lines | |
| Purchase limit | custom.purchase_limit | Integer | Minimum 1 | 1 | "Limit 1 per customer", the quantity cap on the product page and in the cart (chapter 6) |
| Min players | custom.players_min | Integer | Minimum 1 | 2 | Game stats (chapter 11) |
| Max players | custom.players_max | Integer | Minimum 1 | 4 | Game stats, and the Players filter |
| Min play time | custom.play_time_min | Integer (minutes) | Minimum 1 | 45 | Game stats |
| Max play time | custom.play_time_max | Integer (minutes) | Minimum 1 | 60 | Game stats |
| Minimum age | custom.min_age | Integer | Minimum 1 | 12 | Game stats |
| Weight | custom.weight | Decimal | Minimum 1, maximum 5 | 2.6 | The weight pips and label in game stats |
| Base game | custom.base_game | Product reference | Starfall Harbour | The base-game guard and the "Needs the base game" card line (chapter 11) | |
| Expansions | custom.expansions | Product reference, List of products | Tidewatch, Deep Water | The "Expand this game" strip on a base game |
A few rules the theme follows, so you know what to type:
- Rarity is read without regard to capitals: "Legendary", "legendary" and "LEGENDARY" all work. Any other word shows no badge. Store the six words above even if you renamed the labels (a card shop's "Secret rare" is still stored as Chase); the badge shows your label from Theme settings › Collecting.
- Whole numbers must be 1 or more. A 0 counts as "not filled in" and shows nothing.
- Weight must be between 1 and 5; anything outside shows no weight.
- Release date works best as Date and time, so a drop lands at the hour you announce. The theme shows it in your store's time zone.
- Ships from is for pre-orders. Clear it once the stock arrives: the cart labels any line with a ships-from date as a pre-order.
Step 2: create the variant metafield definitions
Some facts belong to one variant. Go to Settings › Custom data › Variants and add:
| Name | Namespace and key | Type | Example | Used by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Edition number | custom.edition_number | Integer, minimum 1 | 45 | "No. 045 of 500" (padded with zeros to the edition size's digits). With no edition size, "No. 45". |
| Rarity | custom.rarity | Single line text, same choices as the product's | Chase | A variant's own rarity wins on the product page: useful when one variant of a figure is the chase |
| Ships from | custom.ships_from | Single line text | Ships from 28 Nov | A variant's date wins over the product's |
Fill a variant's metafields in admin by opening the product, clicking the variant, and scrolling to Metafields.
Step 3: collections for your sets
A set is an ordinary collection: one per series, wave, run or line, such as "Neon Ronin wave 3" or "Velocity #1 to #12". Make the collection (manual or automated), then on each product in it choose that collection in its Set (custom.set_collection) metafield. The set tracker, the product page's set box, the "Got it" toggles and the cart nudge all follow from that (chapter 10).
Step 4: product tags (optional)
| Tag | What it does |
|---|---|
rarity:common … rarity:chase | A rarity for products without the Rarity metafield, so a tagged catalogue works straight away. The metafield wins when both are set. Also builds the rarity strip with Build the rarity strip from tags (chapter 13). |
new | Shows the "New" badge whatever the product's publish date |
Step 5: filters
Install Shopify's free Search & Discovery app and add filters for the metafields shoppers browse by: Rarity (custom.rarity) for the rarity strip, Players for player-count chips, plus anything else you like (Series, Exclusive, Grade). Chapter 13 has the steps.
What shows without the data
| Missing | What happens |
|---|---|
| Rarity | No badge; the bubble stays a neutral tint; no ring or foil |
| Series | The card's series line shows the vendor (or follows Series line in Theme settings › Product cards); no series chip on the product page unless Show the vendor without a series is on |
| Set | No "Got it" toggle on cards (with Only for products in a set), no set box, the "Complete the set" strip hides |
| Edition size and number | No edition chip; the card shows the next fact it has (grade, base game, game stats) or no meta line |
| Exclusive | No exclusive badge |
| Grade | No grade chip, no slab label |
| Release date | No drop chip, countdown or drop lock; the product sells as normal |
| Ships from | Pre-orders show "Pre-order" without a date (or the section's pre-order note) |
| Purchase limit | No cap and no limit line |
| Game fields | Each missing value drops its tile; with none, no game stats at all |
| Base game | No guard and no "Needs the base game" line |
| Expansions | The "Expand this game" strip hides |
The theme editor shows a short note in place of a block that has nothing to show for the product you're previewing, so you can still select it; shoppers never see those notes.
