Nail shape and size
Chapter 10 of the Tress user guide.
Press-on sets sell on three choices: the shape, the length and the size. Tress draws the first two as nails, shows the tip numbers behind each standard size, and lets a shopper type ten custom sizes, one per finger, with rules strict enough that you never receive an order you can't make.
When it turns on
Only on press-on sets: a product with an option named in Nail shape option names (Shape, Nail shape), or a size option (named in Nail size option names, Size by default) with a value equal to Custom size value (Custom). A T-shirt's or a wig cap's "Size" option is never turned into nail sizes.
Name the length option Nail length, not Length: an option called Length is read as a hair length (chapter 8), and "Short" isn't a number, so it would show as plain tiles. If your options are called something else ("Nail shape", "Tip length", "Fit"), add those names to the settings, separated by commas.
A good press-on set has three options: Shape (Almond, Coffin, Square, Stiletto, Oval), Nail length (Short, Medium, Long) and Size (XS, S, M, L, XL, Custom). Price the Custom variants higher if custom sets cost you more to make.
Shape and length chips
- Shape: each value shows as a tall chip with a drawn nail in a glossy polish gradient (from the badge gloss colors to the accent), at the shopper's chosen length, with its name under it. Shapes are read from words in the value: almond; coffin or ballerina; square; squoval; stiletto; oval; round. If one value isn't any of those ("Lipstick"), the whole option shows as tiles.
- Nail length: each value shows as the same nail in the chosen shape, at short, medium, long or extra long (from the words short, medium, long, and xl or extra long in the value). Unknown words: tiles for the whole option.
Choose Coffin and the length chips redraw as coffins; choose Long and the shape chips grow. This works with no page reload, in quick view too. The chosen chip gets a ring in the heading color.
Sizes and tip numbers
The size option shows as tiles. Under them, for a standard size with a line in Tip numbers per size (chapter 7), a card reads "Tips in size M, the same on both hands", with five drawn tips from thumb to pinky, the tip number under each and the finger's name. A size with no line shows no card.
Custom sizes
Choosing the Custom size value replaces the tips card with the custom panel: "Size: Custom", the help line "Enter a size from 0 to 11 for each nail, thumb to pinky. Not sure? Get the sizing kit.", the fingers' names (Thumb, Index, Middle, Ring, Pinky) and two rows of five fields, Left and Right.
The rules, which you can rely on when you make the set:
- Every field takes a whole number from 0 to 11, and all ten are required.
- Letters and symbols are refused as they're typed: "Numbers only: use a size from 0 to 11." A typed 12 stays in the field and is marked: "12 isn't a size. Use 0 to 11." Nothing is ever changed or cut short without telling the shopper.
- Pasting a row of sizes (from notes, or a message from you) fills the fields in order from the one pasted into: left thumb to left pinky, then right thumb to right pinky, and says "5 sizes pasted." Sizes can be separated by spaces, commas, semicolons, slashes, bars or new lines. If any piece isn't a size, or there are more sizes than fields left, nothing is changed and the shopper is told why: "“3a” isn't a size. Paste sizes from 0 to 11 only. Nothing was changed." or "That paste has 12 numbers. Paste up to 10 sizes from 0 to 11, one per nail. Nothing was changed."
- Add to bag is blocked until all ten are valid: the first empty or wrong field is marked and focused, with "Enter all ten sizes, or choose a standard size."
- Buy it now is hidden while Custom is chosen and the sizes aren't complete, with "Buy it now appears once all ten sizes are filled in." in its place, because accelerated checkout would skip the sizes. It comes back as soon as all ten are valid, or when the shopper chooses a standard size.
The sizes travel with the order as the line item property Nail sizes, such as "L 3 6 5 6 9 · R 3 6 5 6 9": in the bag, at checkout and on the order in admin.
Remembering sizes. With Remember custom sizes on the shopper's device on (the default), a shopper's custom sizes are saved in their own browser after they add a custom set. Next time they choose Custom, a button offers them back: "Use my saved sizes (L 3 6 5 6 9 · R 3 6 5 6 9)". Nothing is ever filled in without that click, and the sizes never leave the shopper's device until they order.
Not sure of their size?
- The sizing kit row: with a Sizing kit product chosen (chapter 7), the size option is followed by "Not sure of your size?": the kit's photo, title, price and Sizing kit note ("$6.00 · Try every size at home"), and an Add kit button that adds it to the bag without leaving the page ("Sizing kit added to your bag."). A kit with options links to its product page instead.
- How to measure your nails: a link that opens a guide with three numbered steps ("Press a strip of clear tape across each nail.", "Mark the widest points with a fine pen.", "Peel it off, measure between the marks in mm, and find the closest size below."), a small drawing, your Tip widths as a table ("Size 3 · 15 mm") and "Between two sizes? Choose the larger." Esc closes it and focus goes back to the link.
Lacquer's home page sells the same idea with an Image with text section ("Not sure of your size? Try them all first") and its header's "Find your size" utility link. Point that link at a page of your own, such as a nail size guide with your tip widths and photos of the kit.
In the theme editor, a product that isn't a press-on set shows sample nail chips and a custom size panel tagged Sample.
