# Search and filters

Chapter 9 of the Torque user guide.

## Search

- **Search suggestions** appear under the header search field after two characters: products (with their part number), collections, pages and articles. Shopify matches product titles, types, vendors, tags, SKUs and barcodes, so OEM and cross-reference tags work here (chapter 6).
- The **search page** shows results with filters and sorting. Section settings: **Show breadcrumbs**, **Enable filtering**, **Enable sorting** (all on) and **Results per page** (12, 8 to 36 in steps of 4).
- To make a product easier to find by another name, add the term as a tag, or set up synonyms in the Search & Discovery app.

## Collection pages

The **Collection** section settings: **Show breadcrumbs**, **Show collection image**, **Show description**, **Show vehicle bar** (needs vehicle fitment on and the Fitment filter in Search & Discovery), **Enable filtering**, **Enable sorting** (all on) and **Products per page** (12, 8 to 36 in steps of 4).

Filters appear in a sidebar on desktop and a drawer on phones, with the active filters as removable chips above the grid. Changing a filter or the sort updates the grid without reloading the page.

## Setting up filters

Filters come from Shopify's free **Search & Discovery** app:

1. Install the app and open **Filters**.
2. Add the filters you want: availability, price, product type, vendor, tags, variant options (such as Size or Color), and product or variant metafields (such as Material, Thread size or Voltage).
3. Add the **Fitment** metafield filter as well if you use vehicle fitment (chapter 6). The theme hides it from the sidebar and drives it from the finder instead.
4. Reorder filters in the app; the theme follows that order.

Shopify doesn't show filters on collections with more than 5,000 products. Use smaller category collections for big catalogues.

The **Collections grid** section on the `list-collections` template (`/collections`) lists every collection, or the ones you choose, as tiles.
