# Customer accounts

How the header account button works with Shopify's customer accounts, and which parts of accounts Techno controls.

Customer accounts let shoppers sign in to see their orders, profile and saved addresses. Turn them on in **Settings › Customer accounts**.

Customer accounts are Shopify's. The sign-in, orders, profile and addresses pages are hosted by Shopify, with passwordless sign-in by email code, and look the same whichever theme you use. Techno controls the account button in the header and the menu it shows.

## Account button

When customer accounts are on, an account icon appears in the header next to search. It uses Shopify's account component. The icon opens an account panel. Signed out, it offers sign-in options. Signed in, the icon shows the customer's initial or Shop profile picture, and the panel lists account links.

Theme settings › Customer accounts › "Customer account menu" chooses the links in the account panel. The default is `customer-account-main-menu`, which Shopify creates with Orders and Profile and you can edit in **Online Store › Navigation**. If the setting is empty, or the menu it points to is deleted, the panel uses `customer-account-main-menu`.

When customer accounts are off, the button is hidden.

## Stores on legacy customer accounts

Techno doesn't include legacy account pages. Shopify [deprecated legacy customer accounts](https://shopify.dev/changelog/legacy-customer-accounts-are-deprecated) in February 2026. A store still on legacy accounts is moved to the current customer accounts by Shopify when it publishes a theme without legacy account pages, such as Techno.
