# Allergens and dietary

Chapter 11 of the Sprinkle user guide.

Sprinkle shows dietary claims and allergen statements on your treats. **It only displays what you enter.** It doesn't check anything, it can't know what's in your kitchen, and it can't tell whether a claim is true.

> **Dietary chips and allergen statements show what you enter. You're responsible for them being accurate and for any allergen law where you trade.**

Allergen and food labelling rules differ from place to place, and they may ask for more than a website can show, such as labels on the box. Check with your local food authority.

## What shoppers see

| Where | What shows |
| --- | --- |
| **Cards** | Dietary chips from `custom.dietary`, up to **Dietary chips on cards**, then "+2". On a card a chip is a claim, not a link. |
| **Product page, buy box** | The **Dietary chips** block |
| **Product page, under the gallery** | The **Allergens and dietary** panel: a heading, the chips, the statement, then **Ingredients** and **Storage and shelf life** as rows that open |
| **Quick view** | Dietary chips, and a link to the full details. No statement. |
| **Collection and search pages** | A row of dietary chips above the grid, which filter (chapter 13) |
| **Compare** | Dietary and Allergens rows |
| **Footer** | The kitchen statement, in the brand column |

## The statement

The statement is the panel's most important line. It has two parts, in one paragraph:

* **The bold part** comes from `custom.allergens`: "**Contains: wheat, egg, milk.**" Your list is joined with commas, in your order and your words, and the theme adds "Contains:" and the full stop.
* **The second part** is **Theme settings › Allergens and dietary › Kitchen statement**: "Made in a kitchen that handles nuts." Leave it blank if you'd rather not show one.

**The statement appears on every product.** With `custom.allergens` empty, the bold part becomes **When no allergens are listed** ("Allergens not listed. Please ask us before ordering."). That's the one safety rule in this feature: silence reads as "contains no allergens", so the panel is never blank. For the same reason, the panel can't be removed from the Product section, and if you clear the fallback line the theme puts the default words back. In the theme editor it shows exactly what shoppers will see, with no sample.

The statement is what you say about one product. The kitchen statement is what's true of everything you make. Read them together: if your kitchen handles nuts, a **Nut free** chip on a product says something you may not be able to promise. "No nuts in the recipe" is a different claim from "nut free", so think about which one you can stand behind.

## The panel's settings

The **Allergens and dietary** block sits under the gallery in the Product section. You'll find it in the editor's block list.

| Setting | Default | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Heading | "Allergens and dietary" | The panel's heading |
| Show dietary chips | On | The chips at the top of the panel. Turn this off if the Dietary chips block in the buy box is enough. |
| Show ingredients | On | The Ingredients row, from `custom.ingredients` |
| Show storage and shelf life | On | The Storage and shelf life row, from `custom.storage` |

The two rows show only when there's data, and line breaks are kept. The statement has no setting. The block can also be added to a **Featured product** section.

## Dietary chips

Chips show in the order of **Dietary labels, in chip order**, whatever order they're in on the product. The value's spelling follows the label, so "gluten free" on a product prints as "Gluten free". A value that isn't in your labels still shows, at the end, as you wrote it.

The default labels are Gluten free, Vegan, Nut free, Egg free, Dairy free and Halal. Add your own, such as Contains alcohol or Kosher. Each line is one label.

**Dietary chips on cards** sets how many a card shows (3; 0 hides them), with the rest as "+2". The product page shows them all.

The Sprinkle and Patisserie home pages have dietary tiles, and the Sprinkle home page has chips above Best sellers. Chapter 13 explains how to make them lead somewhere.
