# Search and filters

Chapter 12 of the Roast user guide.

**Predictive search.** The header's search shows results as shoppers type: products (with their origin, process and tasting notes, so a search for "chocolate" shows why a coffee matched), collections, pages and articles, then a link to all results. Turn it off with Header › **Show search**.

**Search page.** Results with filters and sorting: **Enable filtering**, **Enable sorting** and **Results per page** (12, 8 to 36).

**Collection filters.** Filters come from Shopify's free **Search & Discovery** app: install it and add filters under **Filters**. Roast shows them in a sidebar on large screens and a **Filter** drawer on phones, with the active filters as removable chips; filtering works without script too. Useful filters for a coffee store:

* Availability, Price, Product type and Vendor.
* Metafield filters (the app lists a metafield once its definition exists): **Roast level** (`custom.roast_level`, shown with roast dots), **Tasting notes** (`custom.tasting_notes`, shown as chips), **Origin** (`custom.origin`), **Process** (`custom.process`) and **Brew methods** (`custom.brew_methods`).
* Option filters such as Size and Grind.

**Quick filters.** The Collection section's **Quick filters** shows up to four filter values as chips over the grid, such as `Filter, Espresso, Decaf`: write them as they appear in the filters. The Featured collection section has its own quick filters: chips linking to up to four collections.
