# Getting started

Chapter 1 of the Inkwell user guide.

## What's in your download

| File | What it is |
| --- | --- |
| `Inkwell-1.0.0-inkwell.zip` | The theme with the **Inkwell** preset: planners and printables |
| `Inkwell-1.0.0-shutter.zip` | The theme with the **Shutter** preset: photo presets and LUTs |
| `Inkwell-1.0.0-studio.zip` | The theme with the **Studio** preset: design templates and small-business kits |
| `Inkwell-user-guide.pdf` | This guide |
| `LICENSE.txt` | Your licence: one store per purchase |

The three zips are the same theme. A preset only decides the starting palette, fonts, a few settings, words, home page, contact page, password page, header and footer, and you can change all of them afterwards. Products, photos, preview pages, files and demo text are not included: a fresh install shows your own products, and sections that need a product or collection show placeholders until you choose one.

## Presets

| Preset | For | Palette | Fonts | Home page |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Inkwell | Planners, printables and digital planners | Paper | Libre Baskerville headings, Proza Libre body | A **Flat lay** hero ("Plan beautifully, *print instantly*", with three ticks, a Works with row, a sticky note and a pen note), **Shop by format** folders, Bestsellers (8 products), **Look inside before you buy** (a featured product as an open spread of its preview pages), the **freebie opt-in** ("Get a free weekly planner"), **How it works** in three numbered steps, an FAQ about licenses, files and refunds, testimonials on index cards ("Kind notes from planners") and the newsletter |
| Shutter | Photo presets and LUTs | Darkroom (dark) | Manuale headings, Proza Libre body | A **Before and after** hero ("Your photos, in a *better light*", with Moody, Airy and Film pairs), Preset packs (8), **Works where you edit** (four icons), a **Before and after** section with four tabs, **Bundles** ("The everything bundle"), the freebie opt-in ("Get 3 free presets"), an FAQ and testimonials ("Kind notes from photographers") |
| Studio | Design templates, brand kits and small-business stationery | Pop | Besley headings, Proza Libre body | A **Colour blocks** hero ("Brand kits for small businesses that move fast", whose second button scrolls to the licenses), the **License guide** (Personal, Commercial, Extended), **Shop by kit** folders, New this month (8), **Bundles** ("Launch bundle"), a featured product as an open spread ("Look inside the bakery brand kit"), How it works, the freebie opt-in ("Get a free social media starter pack"), an FAQ and testimonials ("From small businesses like yours") |

The presets also differ in a few settings:

* **Inkwell**: **Product image shape** Portrait 4:5, **Show quick add button** on, **Show second image on hover** on.
* **Shutter**: **Product image shape** Square, **Show quick add button** on, **Show second image on hover** on, and the back-to-top button on the right.
* **Studio**: **Product image shape** Square, **Show quick add button** and **Show quick view button** on, **Show second image on hover** off.

The fourth palette, **Ink** (a deep navy page, cream text and marigold buttons, for premium planner brands and ebook authors), has no preset of its own; choose it in Theme settings › Colors on any preset.

Every preset's product page has the same buy box: the product type and rating above the title, the price, the **Instant download** badge with "No physical item will be shipped", the **Works with** chips, stock, the variant picker (with **license cards** for a License option), the buy buttons with the price in them, a back-in-stock request, **The details** (format, pages, file size and delivery) and four rows: Description, How to download, License terms and Refunds on digital items. Under the photos come **What's inside** (the preview pages and the What's included checklist) and **Before and after**, then "Pairs well with" recommendations. Rewrite the rows to your own terms.

Every preset also ships these templates, which you assign to pages in admin (**Online Store › Pages**, then the page's **Theme template** field):

| Template | Use it for | What's on it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `page.licenses` | A page explaining your licenses (chapter 10) | The page's title and content, then the **License guide** section with Personal, Commercial and Extended |
| `page.contact` | Your contact page | The contact form with an order number field and two text columns ("Before you write", "Can't find your files?") |
| `page.compare` | Side-by-side comparison (chapter 4) | The comparison table |

The presets' buttons and menu promos point to `/collections/all`, the FAQ's "Write to the studio" link to `/pages/contact`, and the hero's second button to the freebie section on the same page (`#freebie`; in Studio, to the License guide, `#licenses`). Create a contact page with the handle `contact` and the `page.contact` template, then point each section's links to your own collections as you build them.

## Install

1. In Shopify admin, go to **Online Store › Themes**.
2. In the **Theme library**, click **Add theme › Upload zip file** and choose the zip of the preset you want. Don't unzip it first.
3. When the upload finishes, click **Customize** to open the theme editor and make it yours.
4. When you're ready, click **Publish** (on the theme's **…** menu in the library, or from the editor). You can upload a second preset next to it to compare; only the published theme is live.

## First steps

1. **Delivery**: install Shopify's free **Digital Downloads** app and attach your files to your products, so every order delivers itself (chapter 8). Untick **This is a physical product** on each download, so the theme shows **Instant download** and checkout asks for no shipping address.
2. **Brand**: Theme settings › Brand: your logo, or the shop name as a text wordmark in the heading font, and a favicon.
3. **Colors and fonts**: Theme settings › Colors › Color palette, then Typography (chapter 2).
4. **Menus**: in admin, **Content › Menus**: build the main menu and the footer menu (chapter 3).
5. **Real promises**: the presets ship with demo words. Rewrite the announcement bar, the hero's ticks, the How it works steps, the FAQ, the product page rows and the freebie's text so they only promise what you offer, and replace the sample testimonials with real ones.
6. **Product data**: create the metafield definitions and the `license` metaobject (chapter 7), then fill them on a few products to see preview pages, the details, license cards and Works with chips appear.
7. **Licenses**: if you sell personal and commercial licenses, add a **License** option to those products (chapter 10).
8. **Freebie**: upload your free file in **Content › Files** and paste its link into the freebie section's **Download link** (chapter 12).
9. **Filters**: install Shopify's free **Search & Discovery** app to set up filters (chapter 14).
